The David Traylor Zoo of Emporia Provides Free Animal Fun Year-Round

    June 27, 2025

The David Traylor Zoo of Emporia is a staple for local families and one of the best places to spend your time as a visitor. It is home to nearly 300 animals across 67 species, each exhibited in natural habitats that provide immersive experiences for visitors. This zoo allows Emporia to do its part for conservation efforts both across the world and in our Kansas backyard.

“The zoo is an oasis of color and animals and conservation and fun,” says Brenda Young, Executive Zoo Director. “It’s a chance for families to escape the hustle and bustle of life.”

The zoo plays an important role in fostering the quality of life of Emporia residents and bringing visitors to the area. Learn more about its conservation work and how it ties to economic development.

Emporia Has One of the Smallest Accredited Zoos in America

The David Traylor Zoo of Emporia is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, an organization that ensures facilities meet the highest standards of animal care. Accreditation proves the animals are well-cared for and live in safe, low-stress environments. AZA-accredited zoos also meet industry standards for their conservation efforts and education programs.

“Accreditation is a valuable representation of the work we do to provide the gold standard for animal care,” says Young. “It also means we are supporting our visitors and providing quality experiences for them. We have to meet the same standards as bigger zoos, so accreditation reflects well on us, given our size.”

Young also emphasizes that most zoo animals are no longer taken from the wild and are instead shared through zoo-based breeding programs. This protects wild populations across the world while also allowing families in Emporia to see exotic species up close.

Visitors Can Connect With Local Kansas Species

Another cool reason to visit the zoo is to learn about the native Kansas wildlife in the local ecosystem. Visitors can see bison, prairie dogs, and the red fox, all of which live across the American Midwest.

“It’s easy to forget the wildlife in your backyard,” says Young. “It’s just as important to support the conservation of our own flora and fauna – and there’s so much of it in Kansas.”

Young adds that the United States has its own equivalent to the Seregenti, and it’s right here in Kansas. The majestic bison, with their unique place in American history, represent the elephants of our country.

The David Traylor Zoo of Emporia also plays a role in wildlife rehabilitation. When animals are injured in the wild or unable to survive independently, they find a home at the zoo. Flint, a cougar, is one of the most popular animals in Emporia. He was found alone as a cub in 2012 and never had the chance to learn survival skills. The zoo gives him a safe life and allows him to participate in conservation education.

Other animals at the zoo that could not survive in the wild include two bald eagles and all of their owls. Even if the animals made a full recovery after their injuries, they would become desensitized to people and would be a danger to themselves and Kansas residents.

Free Admission Allows All of Emporia to Engage With Animal Life

The David Traylor Zoo of Emporia provides educational opportunities for the entire community. While a traditional zoo might charge $20 per ticket (which adds up for entire families), anyone can learn about the animals who call the Emporia zoo home, no matter their budgets. Zoo visitors are diverse, come from all walks of life, and are all curious about the types of animals that live on planet Earth.

“We’re able to provide this service thanks to our community support,” says Young. “We can offer educational opportunities and make connections with folks who otherwise wouldn’t be able to access that type of environment.”

Everyone has a place in Emporia, just as everyone deserves to learn about the wonders of animal life. The zoo is also open until 8 PM on Sundays and Wednesdays to accommodate different work schedules. Guests can arrive later in the evening if they can’t come during the day.

The Zoo is One Aspect of Emporia’s Quality of Life

The David Traylor Zoo of Emporia is just one reason why Emporia is a great place to live. This community has a high quality of life, from immersive experiences in nature to community groups that want to see you thrive. Any family that comes to Emporia can feel welcome and find opportunities to make friends and connections.
