Newman Regional Health Serves 42,000 Patients as One of the Largest Employers in Emporia

    March 11, 2025

Newman Regional Health has supported the Emporia region for more than a century. Since 1922, this not-for-profit hospital has been owned by the residents of Lyon County and has strived to provide quality rural care to the people of Kansas. Today, Newman is a powerhouse in the region, with investments in advanced technology and new programs to support different treatment needs.

“We have a multispecialty clinic, a state-of-the-art emergency room, an outstanding hospital with post-acute services, and a comprehensive portfolio of outpatient services,” says Cathy Pimple, CEO of Newman Regional Health. “Our goal is for all of our providers to know Emporia residents by name and understand their healthcare stories and needs. We can do that in a more intimate way because we serve all of their healthcare needs.”

Newman provides personalized care through clear communication across departments and a mission to meet the community's needs. Learn more about this healthcare provider and its economic impact on Emporia.

Emporia Residents Don’t Have to Travel for Care

One of the main benefits of having a healthcare center like Newman in the area is that patients can receive support in their community instead of traveling to Topeka, Wichita, or Kansas City. Shorter travel times mean patients are less likely to miss work or need childcare while they receive treatment. Family members and other loved ones can stand by their side and offer support.

Newman Regional Health has grown over the years and offers an impressive list of services to Emporia residents. Here are a few highlights that make this organization stand out.

    • The designated trauma center guarantees rapid triage and life-saving care at a moment’s notice.
    • Newman boasts a PCI-accredited Cardiovascular Lab that uses cutting-edge technology to promote heart health.
    • Patients can recover from surgery in the 10-bed acute Inpatient Medical Rehabilitation unit.
    • The Women’s Life Center averages 350 births each year, bringing the next generation of Emporia residents into the world.
    • The healthcare center has invested $21 million in advanced diagnostic equipment for better imaging.
    • Newman has invested in robotic surgical tools that reduce complications, speed up recovery times, and drive better patient results.

In recent years, Newman has also invested $46 million to modernize its facilities, creating a better work environment for its employees while providing comprehensive and comfortable patient care.

Newman Regional Health Continues to Attract Top Talent

Investing in quality equipment and upgrades is only the first step in developing a valuable hospital. Without experienced team members and skilled doctors, the patients can’t receive the care they need. Newman has brought additional providers to Emporia, allowing the healthcare facility to expand its offerings and provide new services to patients.

“We’re doing a lot of things right,” says Pimple. “We’ve had a lot of success in recruiting top-notch, high-quality providers.”

Successful medical talent recruitment speaks to both the healthy work environment at Newman and the greater Lyon County community. Emporia is a place where people want to live and bring their families.

Newman employs 700 Emporia residents, and each employee creates positive patient experiences. From surgeons to schedulers to our environmental staff, everyone at Newman can work toward the mission of providing high-quality, patient-centric care close to home.

Newman Has a Significant Economic Impact on Emporia

Newman provides more than $64,000,000 in salaries and benefits to employees. Newman’s presence in the community has created 382 additional jobs in nearby sectors, including retail and restaurant businesses. Pimple found that every $1,000 spent on hospital wages supports $483 in local income, giving the hospital an economic impact of $25.85 million.

“As our healthcare system becomes stronger, we can create strength in the community,” says Pimple.

Newman provides over $6,000,000 in uncompensated care annually, ensuring financial challenges do not prevent Emporia residents from getting medical treatment. The hospital is deeply involved in the community and offers free health screenings, wellness classes, and other services through partnerships with local groups. These efforts improve the health of Emporia residents while raising the overall quality of life of the community.

Additionally, Pimple is actively involved in the works of the Emporia Regional Development Association (RDA) and frequently attends meetings and events to highlight the connection between healthcare and long-term economic success.

The People Are the Center of Rural Healthcare

The most important benefit of having a rural healthcare center like Newman is the personalized care that comes with being treated by people you know. Your primary care doctor works with any specialists you need to meet with and can discuss your care personally with them. The nursing staff, administrators, and doctors are also your neighbors, with everyone working together to promote patient health.

“It’s not unusual for me to be in the outpatient area and hear that someone decided to stay in Emporia because of the healthcare,” says Pimple. “Our team does an excellent job here.”

Because Newman Regional Health is owned by the residents of Lyon County, they can support the hospital by choosing it for their healthcare needs. Residents can challenge Newman to live up to its mission of providing rural healthcare excellence and learn about the various services available. Take advantage of these services and see how your health improves.
